 HIKING & WALKING:
Various easy to follow trails cris-cross the farm, bringing
you in contact with the abundant bird-life
and game of the Eastern Cape. You will have ample opportunity
to view kudu, wildebeest, rhebuck, impala and other
antelope species in their natural habitat. Baboons, vervet
monkeys warthog and dassies occur in abundance and, if
you’re lucky, you might glimpse nocturnal animals such
as lynx, aardvark or black-backed jackal. Trails are unmarked,
but a guide could be supplied for a daily fee.
BIRDING & GAME VIEWING:
The Baviaans River valley is
the domain of the majestic Black Eagle – king of the
African skies. It is possible to observe these majestic eagles
and a multitude of other raptors at close range in and around
the cliffs and plains of the farms. Blue cranes, secretary
birds, cape eagle owls and African night jars make up some
of nearly 200 species of birds that have been identified
in the region. Animals include kudu, bontebok, blue wildebeest,
impala, bushbuck, fallow deer, aardvark, lynx, black-backed
jackal, brown hyena, warthog and a host of smaller mammals
and reptiles.
OUTDOOR & ADVENTURE SPORTS:
The
area and sunny weather lends itself to outdoor pursuits for
anyone with a sense
of adventure. A vast network of dirt roads are ideal for
mountain biking. Trails wind up hills and along valleys
(we have a well-marked, circular trail of around 25km), with
some excellent downhills and technical sections for the serious
enthusiast. 4x4 off-roaders can test their skill on gravity-defying
jeep-tracks in conditions that will separate the men from
the boys. Other possible activities for the brave of heart
include kiting, paragliding, abseiling and solo
climbing, but be sure to bring your own equipment.
